New Leash on Life Program

Program Suspended
Notice: This program has been suspended pending reestablishing the program

Mesa County Animal Services and the Grand Mesa Youth Services Center are pleased to announce the continuation of the “New Leash on Life” program. The program is a collaborative effort between Mesa County Animal Services and the Rob Roc Dog Training Program. Five youth from the center and five “adoption ready” dogs will be completing a four week program. Each team will master the five basic commands of heel, sit, come, down and stay and will learn disciplines that will assist both members of each team, youth and dog, for life’s challenges.

The New Leash on Life Program began in 1999 and five sessions are offered each year. Each class matches five youth with an eager, happy, energetic and adoptable dog or puppy. The program is a unique way to teach life skills and the value of structure and discipline to the young man or woman training each dog. It also provides the dog with skill necessary to become a valued and beloved companion pet in any household.

New Leash on Life

If you are interested in adopting a New Leash on Life dog, there are a few requirements that you need to be aware of prior to the adoption.

A New Leash on Life dog may be adopted prior to the graduation ceremony and completion of the class. However, the dog must remain at the Mesa County Animal Services until the program has been completed. As a program participant adopter, you are invited to attend the graduation ceremony! While your dog is completing the training program, you are encouraged to schedule visitation times with him or her at the shelter during business hours. Your dog will enjoy the visit and you will be able to watch as they master the five basic commands. You will have an opportunity to meet the program trainer at the graduation ceremony and discuss the training tips he uses in training dogs to be obedient pets. If you continue your pets training at home, you will have a jump start on an easy transition for your pet and your family.

If you have any question about one of our New Leash on Life dogs, please call us directly at 970-242-4646, or visit with our staff at the front desk.
